Soap Ingredient FAQs

Is this soap cruelty free?

Yes! I always take extra special care to find quality ingredients for my products. In this case, that means using a goat’s milk product that’s advertised as all natural, paraben and paraffin free, and cruelty free. It’s also lab tested!

Why are some soaps different colors, or have brown flecks in them?

I do not use any pigments in my soaps. However, some oil blends (particularly those high in mandarin oil) will leave the soap with a slightly yellowish color. This is due to the natural orange pigment of the essential oils. Brown flecks are from the Organic Shea Butter, which can sometimes contain tiny bits of other parts of the seed. These flecks are harmless and will not scratch your skin.

When I bought my soap it was yellow, but now it’s white. Is it still good?

Yes! The yellow color in the soap is caused by mandarin essential oil. The more the oil is exposed to light and/or oxygen, the more it will lose its color. This does not affect the potency of the fragrance. Most Sapphire Scents products will last about one year after opening, if opened within one year after the packaging date and stored under the proper conditions.

What is vegetable glycerin?

Vegetable glycerin is an all-natural ingredient that is used in a variety of personal care products to help add moisturizing, cleansing, and softening properties. High quality glycerin is derived from natural fats found in vegetable oils. It is made by heating triglyceride-rich vegetable fats — such as palm, soy and coconut oils — under pressure or together with a strong alkali, such as lye.

What is sodium stearate?

Sodium stearate is the sodium salt of stearic acid, and is the most common soap. It is found in many types of solid deodorants and even certain kinds of rubber. It is also a component of some food additives and food flavorings. Common sources of the starting material are vegetable triglycerides obtained from coconut and palm oils and animal triglycerides from tallow.

What is Sodium Myristate?

Myristic Acid, also called tetradecanoic acid, occurs naturally in vegetable or animal fats and oils. There are relatively high levels found in nutmeg, palm oil, coconut oil and butter fat. The salts of Myristic acid are formed by reaction with base materials such as sodium or potassium hydroxide.

What is Sodium Cocoate?

Sodium cocoate is a mixture of fatty acid salts of coconut oil. It is produced by hydrolysis of the ester linkages in coconut oil with sodium hydroxide, a strong base.

What is Sorbitol?

Sorbitol is a type of carbohydrate called a “sugar alcohol.” Most sorbitol is made from potato starch, but it is also found in nature. For example sorbitol can be found in apples, pears, peaches, and prunes.

What is Titanium Dioxide?

Titanium is a metal commonly found in plants and animals. It naturally interacts with oxygen to form titanium oxides, commonly found in ores, sands, and soils. Many people are familiar with titanium dioxide as an active ingredient in sunscreen, where it works as a UV filtering ingredient.

What is Germall Plus?

Germall Plus is a patented natural preservative common in things like cosmetics, baby wipes, soaps, and shampoos. It prevents the spread of yeast, mold, and bacteria. Germall Plus is what is known as a “formaldehyde releaser.” Which might sound scary, but formaldehyde is actually a naturally occurring substance (made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen) and is safe in small amounts! The slow release of formaldehyde from the Germall Plus provides a sort of timed preservative to the soap. Please keep in mind that propylene glycol, and synthetic substance that absorbs water, is involved in the making process of Germall Plus. However, GP is still classified as a natural preservative.

Use the decorative bag from your soap to make a Magickal Sachet or wrap a gift. Or you can use it to hold the herbs for your Ritual Bath so your tub doesn't get so messy! (Like a tea bag.) You could challenge yourself by researching the oils used in the soap, and creating an herb bundle that coordinates. What kind of Magickal Ritual Bath could you create out of the herbs in that bundle?
