How long do candles last?

Test candles so far have burned an average of 37-42  hours with a wood wick. Online information says that a 6oz. wood wick soy candle will burn between 10 and 20 hours. So far, we’re well above average! There is a 35 hour wood wick burn time guarantee, or your money back. Cotton wick candles have a stronger scent but slightly less burn time.

How long should I burn my candle each use?

Did you know that candles have memory? The wax will never melt beyond where it was melted the last time it was burned. To prevent tunneling, you should always make sure you burn your candle long enough to melt the entire top layer all the way to the edges. On average, you should burn your candle between 3 and 5 hours at a time for a wood wick. Cotton wick candles should be burned an average of 2 hours. Remember that a higher flame means a hotter flame, and a hotter flame means an increased risk of broken glass or fire damage. Always practice proper fire safety!

What's the difference between a wood wick and a cotton wick?

Wood wicks offer many perks, as well as their own downsides compared to cotton wick candles. Wood wicks burn lower and at a cooler temperature than cotton wicks, as such the fragrance is slightly less pungent. (I make up for that by loading the wax with about as much fragrance as it will hold!) However, this also offers a longer burn time than candles with cotton wicks. Wood wick candles are best used in smaller spaces such as bathrooms, bedrooms, and offices.

What type of wood is used to make the wicks?

The type of wood used varies from batch to batch. Wicks are typically made from the wood of dead fruit trees (such as apple) when they no longer produce fruit.

How strong does it smell when burning?

They’re double scented! One of the sacrifices we make when ditching paraffin wax is the amount of scent our candle can hold and throw. (We also increase the production cost.) Nothing fills the room quite as well as petroleum-based paraffin wax, but Soy Wax is the next best thing. (And a lot less toxic!) Using a wood wick also causes the candle to burn low and slow, which means a less overpowering scent. To make up for the difference, I’ve increased the amount of scent added to each candle to about double the standard amount. It won’t be the overpowering, smack-you-in-the-face pungency that fills your entire home floor to ceiling and permeates your clothes for weeks to come, like you get from a pricey 3-wick candle. But it will be a lot stronger scented than a standard candle and it will last a lot longer too.  Plus, you can feel a lot better about breathing what’s inside it, as well as supporting a small business. If you are the kind of person who enjoys a very pungent candle, I would suggest going with a cotton wick.

What if my wick won’t light?

A wood wick will not stay alight if it is too long or too short! The sweet spot for candle length is 1/4". If it won’t stay lit, use your fingers to break off the charred black pieces of the wick. (You should also do this before each use.) Make sure there is no debris in the candle before lighting it again. When lighting, make sure the entire wick is burning from one side to the other. If only one side lights, you can tilt the candle so that the flame ignites the other side. If it seems you accidentally trimmed the wick too short and the flame is very low, let it melt for awhile and blow it out. Use a paper towel or tissue to soak up some of the melted wax before relighting.
